03-25-08:
I've only recently became interested in writing TANKA. I felt it was time to challenge myself further in my poetry writing after mastering the writing of 5/7/5 HAIKU.

TANKA is a challenging verse to write in it's original
format of 5/7/5/7/7, 31-syllable, 5-lines.
Like Haiku, Tanka usually do not rhyme. Each is a separate
thought, written in descriptive style to
give the reader a picture in his/her mind of a
moment in time.

heron at the pond
peering through thick brown cat-tails;
a fat green frog hides,
schools of minnows dart swiftly
into the deeper waters

***************************************************

a storm approaches~
spring winds pick up suddenly
carrying feathers
left behind by two blackbirds;
greenish clouds blanket the sun

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
orange streaked sky line
oh mesmerizing sunset;
coyotes gather
awaiting the blue moonlight
when other voices shall sleep
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

strong winds are blowing
scattering red leaves swirling
twirling with a fluttering
feather from a cardinal
bright red, lands in the waters

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
oh hear the sweet songs~
magnificent mockingbird
sitting in a tree;
borrowed tunes from feathered friends
recited in perfection
